Kakadu - part 1

A short drive on from Pine Creek we arrived at the entrance to Kakadu National Park, where there was a small display of wildlife, and some relics from past mining in the area.
We set up camp at Mardukal campsite, fairly central and with hot showers. A short walk away was this beautiful billabong - some people caught fish here, but you had to be fairly dedicated.
A few travellers we'd met along the way had been disappointed with the number of sites closed during their visit, either due to the late wet season or for cultural reasons. Luckily for us, most had reopened by the time we arrived in late June.
Viewing the main iconic rock art sites was an absolute highlight. Many of the images of these are already available online & in books, but the size of the rock shelters was also very impressive, and difficult to convey in a photo - maybe a virtual reality project for someone?
