Barcaldine - Longreach

Monday June 7 - Packed up camp slowly, fingers fumbling in the 3 degree temperature of Charleville, and were back on the straight, flat road by about 9.30am, heading for Longreach.
We only stopped briefly for lunch beside a dry dam in Tambo, and at the Tree of Knowledge monument in Barcaldine.
We arrived about 3.30pm at the Qantas Founders Museum, Longreach- they kindly gave us a pass-out so that we could return the next day, since it closes at 4pm. Checked into a comfortable motel, then walked along the well laid out "Botanic Walkway" to the centre of town.
This sculpture "The Drovers"  by John Underwood was commissioned for Expo88, and now has a permanent home in Longreach.
Next day, at the Stockman's Hall if Fame, this wonderful metal sculpture by Townsville-based artist Sue Tilley greeted me at the entry to the displays.
Other exhibits that caught my eye were these stock bells, including a set made from old tobacco tins. I could have spent much longer in this beautiful museum, but needed to keep moving, so after another quick look at the Qantas museum & a cuppa, we headed off towards Winton.
